Wrangell Alaska Chamber's 60th Annual King Salmon Derby will be held May 12 - June 10, 2012. Resident bag and possession is two king salmon 28 inches or greater in length. See Department of Fish & Game regulations.

FEES AND ELIGIBILITY

See current Salmon Derby Dates - Contestants fishing before 6 a.m. on opening day will be disqualified for the entire day.---

Individual Derby Tickets allow one person to fish. Contestants must present their Salmon Derby Ticket, current

State of Alaska Fishing License & King Salmon Stamp at the weigh-in station - with no exceptions.

Tickets are not transferable. Participants will comply with all ADF&G regulations.  Non-entrants, regardless of age may not fish in the same boats with entrants but may go along for the enjoyment of the outing.

Boundaries for the 2012 Wrangell Salmon Derby will enclose the area bounded by the following:

  • Southeastern: Watkins Point to Menefee Point

  • Southwestern: Steamer Point to Point Nesbitt

  • Northwestern: Point Alexander to Low Point

  • Northeastern: Blaquiere Point to Gerard Point

WEIGHING OF FISH

Salmon must be weighed in the "round" by the contestant at designated weigh stations. Any salmon may be opened at the decision of the committee. Entering any fish caught using methods of gear contrary to the stated

rules risks disqualification

TACKLE AND BOATS

 

Rods must be in accordance with sporting ethics and customs, any rods giving the contestants an unsporting advantage will be disqualified. Mono-filament, dacron, nylon, or wire line and leader shall not exceed a breaking point test of 50 pounds.  Any type of sporting lure or bait may be used.

note: All Derby Participants are allowed ONE(1) ROD ONLY while derby fishing regardless of Fish & Game Regulations that allow more than 1 rod per person. Any person using more than 1 rod will not be eligible to enter fish for that day. No contestant may participate from any boat which has commercial fishing gear in use. However down-riggers may be used with a 10 lb. max. weight.

Salmon, when gaffed, shall be gaffed in the head. Firearms shall not be used in the landing of salmon. A landing net may be used. No underwater cameras will be permitted. The contestant must hook and play his own salmon in a sportsmanlike manner, unaided by another person, except for receiving assistance in gaffing or netting. Any contestant interfering with another contestant by running over or crossing the line while the latter is catching a fish is subject to disqualification.

PRIZES

All contestants are limited to one prize for salmon caught, regardless of the number of salmon entered, except for bonus prizes as determined by the Derby Committee. Contestants must be present to claim derby prizes or have someone present to accept prize on their behalf - we can no longer hold/ship prizes.

1st Prize, $6000; 2nd Prize, $4000; 3rd Prize, $2000.

Super bonus prize: $500 for the first king 50 pounds or over.; $500 bonus prize for the first king 60 pounds or over.


Art Clark Big Soaker Award Senior Citizen - $250 for largest king caught by a person 65 years and over.


Special Youth Prizes - 1st Prize:  $250 for the largest king caught by a youth age 12 or under.  2nd Prize: $100. 3rd Prize:  $50.    Peggy Wilson Prize for Youth - $50 for 2nd Place and $50 for 3rd Place. 

***NEW THIS YEAR!  Youth Prize Update:  If a youth 12 years and under places in the overall top 10 derby ladder they are no longer eligible to win the regular youth prizes, other than the new bike donated by Wells Fargo.

 

Aileen Meissner Memorial Prize - $250 largest king caught on May 28th (donated by Aileen's family).

****NEW THIS YEAR!  2012 Sportsmanship Prize - Guggenbickler $750 to the largest King caught in the first two days of the 2012 Salmon derby:  Saturday May 12th and Sunday, May 13th.

****NEW THIS YEAR!  2012 Ladies Prize - A custom sterling silver 1"x 6.5" Salmon bracelet by Ria Design! Engraved inscription "2012 KIng Salmon Derby".  Valued at $350+ - to the largest King entered by a women in the 2012 derby.

SPECIAL WEEKLY PRIZES: $500.00 each week of the derby

SPECIAL DERBY DAYS: May 26, 27, & 28, 2012 ~~ $2500.00

DECISIONS AND RULES OF ENTRY

In the event of a tie as to weight, the first salmon weighed in will be given the priority, and the second entry will be considered in line for the next prize. The decisions by the judges and Derby Committee in all cases will be final, and only salmon caught in accordance with the above rules will be accepted and entered in the Wrangell Salmon Derby. The Derby Committee ASSUMES NO LIABILITY for changes in schedule or prizes due to any circumstances beyond its control. Derby participants are encouraged to report daily catch totals to ADF&G census personal, data collected provides important information used to determine future allocation of sport caught king salmon in our district.

Witnesses to any violation of Derby Rules must WRITE AND SIGN a detailed complaint within 24 hours of alleged misconduct and submit to the Derby Committee for final decision.
